Cast offs
Mark Hipper Built up out of clay in the manner of pots, these ceramic works are nevertheless more like discarded garments than vessels. Distorted fragile vulnerable membranes, they retain their shapes, like the sloughed skins of snakes. Our bodies develop and alter and mutate and, like the garments with which we cover them, are necessarily discarded, cast off in this gradual transformation. 'Cast offs' suggests old garments, discarded identities and beings that retain their image and associations, a melancholic residue similar to photographs that capture the moments of the recording. This hollowing out of being, of the body becomes the inadequate vessel that it is. Opening reception: Wednesday 5 January, 6pm
