Mandy Lee Jandrell Jandrell has lived in London since 1998 and has recently completed her Masters degree in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London (2003). She will be presenting a solo show of her new work at the Joo Ferreira Gallery in Cape Town in February 2004. This show will comprise of approximately 18 large scale colour photographs shot in several countries including South Africa, China and the U.K. Mandy Lee Jandrell is currently photographing constructed leisure environments such as Theme/ Amusements Parks, Monuments, Playgrounds and Shopping Malls. She is interested in investigating the effects of globalization on local cultures. She is concerned with the economics and politics that drive the aesthetics of place, particularly spaces of leisure and tourism. Jandrell questions notions of truth that are presented in documentary photography, where a subjective view is presented as objective and therefore believed to be real. She investigates the points at which the fake/ fantasy (i.e. the constructed environments) meets the real (the actual experience of the place) in often quite humourous juxtapositions. By using the language of documentary photography she creates a new narrative within the realm of the fake environment.
