OROTHEE KREUTZFELDT ‘living in jhb for seven years now, still a stranger, getting restless. the inner city is being branded and ad-wrapped; there is nike’s ‘this is how i war’ 3dimensional triptych, i look at it everytime i pass and wonder how. now i’m a human shield. now i’m a mansized can. now i wash whiter so i see dirt differently. opposite from the studio people are being evicted. buildings are being blasted up-town every three weeks making way for the gautrain, will it be silver? or yellow and green? its a painters city, grand perspectives, great randomness, chopshop bonnets and bad soap-operas. it’s become homeground, filled with holes, and there are still some golden minedumps, and i’m getting off the obsession with signs thankfully. to stick to concrete and scaffolding and highways so as to not get too lost, thinking tomorrow i buy holy water, go for a swim and paint a vomiting bird.’ Kreutzfeldt works independently from her studio in JHB and shows selected work with João Ferreira Gallery on a regular basis.
